What if public transportation was free?

Where I live there is no public transportation available within walking distance from my house. I have to drive 2 miles to the nearest bus stop. But if this mode of transportation were free, would I drive 2 miles, park, and get on the bus? It sure would save in gas money and wear and tear on my car. But what if I want to go out for lunch? or have a dentist appointment? and other places that my car can go and a bus would not? I'm sure there are answers to all of these questions, but since the service is available right now, and I don't use it, I suspect there are concerns that go beyond the cost. For me I would think that the time element would be one of them. I get up at the last minute as it is every morning. If I took the bus, I'd have to get up quite a bit earlier and spend time waiting at a stop, in less than perfect weather conditions, and so on.

Since I've never known life without independent and private transportation means, I should probably reverse the question to something like this. If the world ceased to have personal vehicles, how would it change my life? Here's my answer... I'd live closer to my job, closer to a grocery store, closer to my church, my family, my dentist, etc. Hmmmmm... sounds like the city!
